Creating a Balance

Learning Objective:
Students will learn that spending too much time online/in front of a screen is not healthy and that “tech breaks” are necessary. Students will brainstorm activities that they can engage in that do not require technology.

Materials:
- All Digital Citizens Poster from Common Sense Media
- Pause and Think Online Video from Common Sense Media from 1:07-1:34
- Make Room for Play - Playground video from ParticipACTION
- Balancing Screen Time Parent Handout
Anticipatory Set
- Introduce the All Digital Citizens Poster.
- Draw student’s attention to the “Balance the Time they spend using media and doing other activities”.
- Define free time. Ask students what activities they like to do during their free time. Record on the board.
- Show students the Pause and Think Online Video (play from 1:07-1:34).
- Tell students they will be learning why it’s important to balance their time between the digital world and the real world.
Method
- Circle all of the activities from the discussion that do not involve technology or screen time (include TV and videogames in screen time).
- Draw student’s attention the other “real world” activities they brainstormed earlier. Have a discussion around the following points:
- How do you feel when you are participating in these activities?
- How do you feel after you are finished participating in these activities?
- What are the benefits of participating in these activities?
- Draw student’s attention to the circled technology/screen time activities from the discussion. Ask students to think about their technology use and discuss the following the points:
- What are you missing out on when you are using technology?
- How do feel when you are using technology?
- How do you feel after you are done using technology?
- Show students the Make Room for Play - Playground video from ParticipACTION
- Discuss the following questions:
- Why do you think screen time is taking away from play time?
- What happens when people do not move and play as much?
- Is screen time taking away from your play time?
Closure
- Ask students why it is important to have a balance between “real world” activities and activities that revolve around the use of technology.
- Pass out the Balancing Screen Time Parent Handout and have students fill out the three activities they can do that do not involve screen time.
